Mixed Media Wood Panel

Hi, Carol Theng today sharing a mixed media wood panel I made using the colors from July Moodboard.

"Memories"

Gesso the wood panel and spread texture paste over a stencil. Misted with blue mist.

Left the chipboard raw and adhered with 3D heavy matt gel. Added the leaves and flowers. And dew drops.

Also added a few drops of glossy accent on the flowers to create dew effect.

This is a very simple and quick project done within 30 minutes. Do have a try.

Colour and Texture - Art Journal page with Deb

Hello Off the Rails fans, 

Deb here with another art journal page and I am using the fabulous February moodboard - 

Colour and Texture.  Dont you just love the bright colours?

First off I gathered my supplies, paying particular attention to the colour and texture prompts.  

Prima, Kaisercraft, Art C, Dylusions and Heidi Swapp provided the colour. 

The texture was provided by the chipboard by Dusty Attic and the Butter Muslin picked up from Sprotlight.  I also used a Kaisercraft Script stamp.

I covered my journal page with a light cover of gesso and then stuck the muslin on top of that using Matte Gel Medium.  Whilst still wet I cut apart the chipboard and laid that onto the muslin.  

When that was dry I applied a thin coat of white gesso.  

Then the fun started.  Starting at the top of the page I went to work with the water colours using plenty of water and plenty of colour.  I made sure that colour also got on the gessoed chipboard.  The colouring of the page took ages to do as I wanted really bright colours so had to add a lot of watercolour - drying between the layers.  In the end I feel it was totally worth it.  

Tip - keep a piece of paper towel close by to mop up the excess water when the page gets too wet.

Once the colour was to my liking and all dry, I took the script stamp and black ink and randomly stamped on the background, including the chipboard.  I then added some clear crackle paste through a Dusty Attic fishnet stencil (you cant see this :( ) before taking the Kaisercraft and Art C paints and adding blobs of colour randomly.  To finish the colour component I splattered the White Linen Dylusions, Gold Heidi Shine and a black paint pen.  I added some colourful sequins as well.

The page was finished with my title "Colour your life outside the lines".

Altered paint brush with Joan

Joan here today and  I have discovered the art of altering paint brushes ... my new favorite thing to alter!

For this altered brush I started out with a 4" (new) paint brush from Lowe's.

 I covered the brush handle and bristles with a couple light coats of white Gesso.

 Next I gathered my supplies from my stash of things I thought I might use.

 Then I painted the handle and metal band with several layers of paint.

I coated the wood handle with a light coat of Mod  Podge and added the tissue paper to the handle.

My favorite part was adding the embellishments.  For me it's a process of finding balance, proportion, variety and harmony.

Hi, everyone. Today I have a layout project and tutorial to share with you. This month's sponsor is Imaginarium Designs and also being part of Imaginarium Designs' DT, I'm going to share how I usually used their chipboard.

"Great Grandma" Layout Tutorial

I spread texture paste over a stencil for the background.

Cut out pieces of patterned papers for the background. Distressed the edges with the Prima distress tool.

I gesso the chipboard and use the H2O Twinkling watercolors to color them.

Tip: I loved to use this sponger dauber to dab the gesso over the chipboard. It helps to create uneven "rough" textures and let the watercolors absorbed into the uneven surfaces.

For the chipboard titles, I painted them with this sequin black acrylic paint.

Using foam tape, I pop up all the pattern papers and photo and chipboard. I loved to create dimensional layout.

Wrote journaling unto strips of papers and adhered with foam tape and glossy accent.

Added some crystals unto the layout randomly with glossy accent.

And here's the end results:

I also added some flower cutouts and Prima flowers.

Here you can see the rough texture created by the dauber. One tip on chipboard: I always save and used the chipboard negatives (the 2 hearts with cross).

In the above project, I shared 2 ways to use chipboard. One is to gesso over them and use watercolors or mists over them. Another is to simply paint over with acrylic paint.  You can also leave them raw or add glitters to dazzle them up.

How To Make a Pen Holder

Hi Guys! I'm Mabel and it's my turn again to create a tutorial for Off the Rails Scrapbooking!

My project today was inspired by OTRS November Mood board which you can find more details HERE!

As you can see, the theme is about recycling. So I decided to make a pen holder out of toilet roll.

The toilet roll I got measures 3 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall. 

I'm using natural jute hemp cord and twirled it around the toilet roll. 

Next, I cut of the circumference of the toilet roll after I traced it on a piece of cupboard. I glued it to one side of the toilet roll to create a base. I then tidied up the rough edges by continuing to glue the hemp cord such that it'll cover the edges.

Now that the surface and the base were done, it's time for colours and embellishments!

I randomly painted white gesso on random areas to create some contrast with the burlap colours.

I also cut up a piece of chipboard from dusty attic (which I can't remember the name anymore I'm sorry!) and painted it with an even coat of white gesso.

This is how it looked like after embellishments. I'm using some flowers from Prima Marketing and from local craft stores (which were brandless). The floral vellum was made using Martha Stewart Adhesive Silkscreen with an even coat of white gesso.

And here's the final look!

I used Colourarte's Silks in Guatemalan Green, African Jade, Mango Tango and Pink Anthurium to achieve this result.

To achieve this soft-washed effect for the flower in the picture below, I simply dilute my colours and applied the colour with a wet brush at the bottom of the flower. The colour will spread and create this effect.
