Scrapping about a recycled theme

Hi once again... good to be back and sharing some tips with you.

My layout is inspired by our "reuse" theme from our moodboard. You might ask where I reused anything on my page... well here's the low down for you:
1. The photos are of my son's art project in which he had to make an outfit from recycle stuff.
 - We made the waistcoat from a pair of pants
 - used old buttons and linked them with paperclips
 - made a paper bowtie
 - the fobwatch was a bedside clock that didn't work which he altered
 - his hat used to be a milk box and we covered it with foam and bling
2. The chipboard elements on my layout are all from my stash...leftovers from another kit.
3. My title is made from old rub-ons that I've had for years.... I even had to use a "3" for my "e" in the word Very.
4. The two black thread pieces were originally from gift bags if I remember... anyway they were off something else and fitted perfectly with this theme of reusing stash.

So though I only have a few items that are truly "recycled" on my page, the whole layout fits with the theme. Let the moodboard inspire you in whichever direction you need to go. Remember to share your work with us on the sidebar link every month.

Adding Details To Your Layout - by CathyS

We've been scrapping all month with the lovely moodboard theme of TRIBE. Have you been inspired to scrap your tribe yet?

Well I followed that theme with photos of my brother and family for my layout. I used four photos that tell the story of trying to get just one decent pic of everyone smiling... not so easy when you have an uncooperative little girl... we eventually got a fairly decent pic!

Here is how my layout came together:

The strip with the croc at the bottom of my layout was just the perfect sentiment for my page... it's been in my stash for YEARS!!! It's from a very old Crate Paper range. I let the colours in this strip (and my photos) lead me for the rest of the page.

Then there are lots of the little techniques that I used... all of these add to the detail and interest to the page:

1. Stamped circles
 I made my own stamp using foam - just cut three little circles and adhered them to an acrylic block. I stamped with Versafine Clair ink in Pinecone (Brown). After playing around with things I decided the brown was a bit toooooo dark so overstamped with Versafine Clair in Glamorous (Red) and Blue Belle (Blue). This definitely made a huge difference to my layout.

2. Tissue Paper
I added little strips of tissue paper at random points on the page... these are added by using a glue stick and putting the glue on the page and then laying the tissue paper over the glue.

3. Inking
Once the tissue paper was stuck, I used Brilliance Lightning Black to randomly stamped some text over the area. Then I used  Versafine Clair Morning Mist (grey) to stencil some tiny squares over the tissue paper. Lastly I splattered some Black All Purpose Ink over the same area. All these different ink applications work well together and just add some interest to the page.

4. Die cut Stars
I cut a bunch of different size stars with my nesting dies and once I was happy with them all I felt the layout needed just a few more. As I don't have a tiny star punch I turned to my dies again and found my doily die that has stars in the pattern. Well I just used leftover bits of paper and diecut a few tiny stars which then got scattered around the page.

5. Straws
I have a little jar on my table in which I keep a variety of paper straws. Adding three to my layout tied together just added a base on which everything rests.

The final few bits on my layout are a strip of red dot paper which looks like it runs behind the photos but is in fact just two pieces on either side. I layered a project life card on the right side which again picked up all the colours and sentiment of my layout. Lastly is the strip of film washi tape under the straws.

So there you have it... a layout with lots of little bits and pieces that make one cohesive end result. Hope these tips inspire you to scrap.

"Daisy Day" wire tutorial by Trish A

This moodboard made me think of daisies..they seem to honour nature..with their brilliant colours and the crispness of their delicate petals.

So although l havent exactly incorporated nature..this is my inpired by the gorgeous moodboard and nature herself.

I started ransacking my stash and sticking it down. I love this style of scrapping as it can use some of those odd things in the piles.

From here l spray painted it all in a light covering of white spray paint...yeah true!

Then the fun starts..

Wire daisy flower.

Ok..some awesome copper wire, l used 18 gauge artistic wire..its lovely to work with, keeps its shape..but is soft enough to bend.

I wrapped a length around this container of handcream and then pulled the circle to elongate it and then bent it to create the petal look.

Then with all my fingers in the right places l used the silver wire to hold it all together.

Then its just a matter of adding it to the background.

Fun with Brusho and water with Narelle

Today I have a fun pictorial for you on how I used Brusho with my Stamparatus. It was heaps of fun and something you should try real soon.

Once  it is dry, have fun making fun projects. I turned mine into a card.

Adding texture to your page with Bev

Hi .. Bev here today. 

I am sharing a page that I put lots of texturing and depth on using embossing, stamping, many layers and added lots of 3D accents. I am also sharing my pattern and details to make the variegated butterfly. This way you can add an accent to make your paper collection for so many projects. This page is my youngest Grand Daughter when she was little.... OMG they grow up so fast.

Today I'd like to share some easy ways to add texture and depth to your pages.

This close up shows a punched border .. but then add a mat with great colour to pop through for layers and depth. Ink the edges for even more depth and shadowing.

This section shows a piece of paper that I embossed then inked to give both texture, depth but a great vintage look too.

 This close up shows more texture and depth by adding layers.using some stencils and inking them. Also note the mat behind the rubon title with even more inking on the edges. Slip a doily way back  behind with all the great design and texturing too.

Not only did we texture and ink the paper in this section we added a punched border for more design, depth and texure. Both the upper and lower slanted borders adds more dementions to the page also especially with the matting and colour.

There is nothing more elegant than a beautiful cluster of flowers and accents.  All 3d looking with chipboard coloured using copic markers, a metal key tied up with timeless twine, flowers and even beaded floral. Now add a multi layers beaded border to base the photo.

Now for the fun part. Making your very own varigated butterfly accent using matching paper from the layout. It  is so easy to co-ordinate to your projects of all kinds... and butterflies are perfect accent for so many themes and creative projects.

Here is the printable sheet of instructions to be printed on 8.5x 11" paper.

After watching the short easy You tube tutorial .. you will be able to make the varigated butterfly to add to any of your projects using products your already have in your stash that co-ordinate with your project.

Here is the close up of the accented section with the butterfly and I also added a twine flight trail. What a great clustered section to add to any project.

Canvas art with Rosemary

Making Canvas Art

I enjoyed making my Canvas Art for the February Moodboard so I thought I would share how I did it!

The photo is of Direction Island, one of the Cocos Keeling Islands way out in the Indian Ocean. Fabulous place for a holiday if you like the beach and snorkelling!

My inspiration to use the thongs was because the beaches on the ocean side of the lagoon were littered with flotsam and jetsam including many many abandoned thongs!!

All about the islands there were pretty cool art creations using this junk!

I came home with a hankering to do something similar and am really pleased with the result!

I used a 14 x 14 inch canvas which had been triple primed so my first step was to apply texture paste through a stencil.

I used Golden Gel Medium Light Moulding Paste over a Tim Holtz Layering Mini Stencil( the brick pattern coming from the moodboard).

I usually leave my projects with moulding paste overnight to dry however one can use a heat tool if one has the patience!!

Once dry I painted strips with Jane Davenport Acrylic Paints

It was at this time that I thought maybe a coat of white gesso on the canvas before I started might have been a good idea as it took a few coats of paint to give the colour that I was happy with.

My next step was to lightly coat my chipboard and title with white Gesso.

 I also coated the outer sides of my photo mat.

 I cut some cheesecloth

and distressed the edges with my fingers

I chose blue for the outer edges of my photo mat

I played around  with where I wanted to place my photo and other features and once I was happy with the placement I took a photo, so I could reference back to it later.

 I don't know if other people work this way but I find it helpful.

I thought the white made a good contrast so I embossed my chipboard and title with Versamark Ink and Altenew Crisp Embossing Powder - Pure White.

The chipboard was Blue Fern studios Chipboard  - Seaside Shells

the title, Kaszazz Chipboard word - Timeless

 Once this was all  done it was time to lay it all down!!

 I glued the thongs down with a hot glue gun.

I  layered the base of my photo with strips of cardboard so that the photo would sit flat across the canvas between the two thongs!

I encountered the same issue with the Kaisercraft Paper Blooms- Sea Breeze but I just layered up the double sided foam mount

                           The chipboard and title I attached with Prima Art Basics 3d Matt Gel

                   I also used the gel too, with a fine paintbrush to stick down the sequins( Dress My Sequins - Sea Breeze).

Voila!!

This canvas now hangs in my home, a lovely reminder of the fab holiday we had in 2014!!!

I had  great fun making this canvas!

 I would really encourage you to give a go!

 Worst comes to worst and you don't like where it is going  you can just cover it all with a layer or

 two of gesso and start again!!

Abstract card with Emma + video tutorial

Hi there, 

For my mid month share I created a very quick card. 

Now cards are not something I create very often, usually just when I need to give one. 

But I have really been enjoying practicing the acrylic style art.

Exploring alcohol inks with Joan

Hi Crafters

Today I'd like to share some information on using Alcohol Inks.

My alcohol inks sat unused on a shelf because I thought you could only use them on non-porous surfaces.  But what if ... you used them on a porous surface?  What if  you used them on watercolor paper?  Guess what ... it works!  Mixing alcohol inks with water creates a vibrant marbled effect and the possibilities are only limited by what you are willing to try.

What you will need:

plastic container

warm water

alcohol inks

watercolor paper

paper towels

latex gloves

1) fill your plastic container half full with warm water

 2) place a few drops of alcohol ink of various colors in the water

 3) dip the watercolor paper in the water

* I wear latex gloves to prevent the ink from staining my fingers

 4) shake off excess water and place on a paper towel to try naturally

* Use bright hues of inks for more vivid colors on your paper

* Don't be afraid to be liberal with the alcohol ink  

* Experiment with different colors
