Adapt and be inspired

Hello all you happy scrappers,

It's Wendy on the blog today and I thought I would drop by to give you a quick example of how I sometimes adapt in order to get my mojo back.

I know some pretty awesome card markers but, although I like making cards, I would not consider myself among their ranks. I often struggle to pull all the elements together to make a card that portrays the right feeling. If I'm doing a layout, I'm always inspired by the photo and what was happening at the time the photo was taken. I don't get that same kind of inspiration when making cards. Well this was the problem I had last weekend when we had a birthday dinner for my sister in law. I really wanted to make a nice card for her but didn't know where to start.

The mojo was back instantly when I thought of Fiona's fabulous sketch and colour palette for the Off the Rails August challenge.

I love the fun colours, so I decided to use all of them on my card. I totally love the sketch too and if I was doing a layout I would hardly change a thing. But, my sister in law is not a real "grunge" "splatter" type of girl. She laughs readily and likes whimsical things. So, I used the basic sketch but replaced the splatters with some whimsical elements.

As you can see, I've scaled everything down to card size and used the "photo" space for the sentiment. I replaced the splatters with fun whimsical elements - pinwheel, feathers, buttons and swirls. I had fun making the teabag fold pinwheel because I haven't made one for ages. I thought these elements together fitted the birthday theme well. I was pleased with the outcome for several reasons - I wouldn't normally have thought of using those colours together (and they work nicely), nor would I have been able to put the elements together as well without the sketch. Most of all though, the card totally suits my sister in law's personality.

Thank you for stopping by.
Happy scrapping and cheers for now :)
